"A pillar of strength and support"
2001 Jan Movie | ||
When director Sanjay Leela Bhansali began shooting a rain dance sequence for his film Devdas at Film City on Friday, December 1, he must have never in his wildest dreams imagined that it would turn out to be one of the most tragic days in the film industry. Till around 4 pm, the work proceeded like it does any normal day. At that time, the dancers and heroine of the film Aishwarya Rai were assembled on the sets for the next shot. Choreographer Baibhavi was instructing the dancers on their steps for the last shot of the day, artificial rain was called for and gigantic 10 by 12 feet storm fans were switched on. |
||
Before everybody's unbelieving eyes, one of the fans suddenly toppled over and crashed on to two workers below, beheading one of them and killing him instantly while seriously injuring the other. Reportedly, within a minute the set had turned into a gruesome scene of carnage, confusion and hysteria with loud shocked screams reverberating to the ceiling, blood everywhere and people running helter-skelter. |
Aishwarya, who was the only one of the star-cast present, was so shocked and shaken that she was on the verge of collapse. Fortunately, Salman who is a frequent visitor, rushed to pitch in and help. He was, "A pillar of strength and support," Ash confided later to friends and colleagues. Ash was won over by her man all over again when Salman rose to the need of the hour, and did all he could, during that time of dire need and dreadful crisis, to be of assistance. He used his celebrity status and star-power to cut through red-tape and get the second, critically injured worker to Nanavati Hospital, plus he dealt with the police and other authorities with charm and grace. |

And knowing our Sallu, and his bizarre ways, he made Hrithik plonk on a cycle and took him for a ride around Bandra Bandstand in Mumbai. Now, now, chweet isn't that! |
Bharat Shah Moves Court Fot CCCC Release |
||
2000 Dec 27 India FM | ||
The Empire strikes back. The real badshah
of bollywood, Bharat Shah has filed his appearance
before the special court hearing the Chori Chori Chupke Chupke case. The special court is examining the prosecution allegations of the producer Nazeem Rizvi being a part of the underworld and laundering illegal money through Bollywood. Shah filed a vakalatnama of his lawyers R M Aziz and Girish Kulkarni on behalf of his firm Mega Bollywood Pvt Ltd. However, he has not staked any claim or raised objection to the negatives of the film seized by the police on December 20 in his vakalatnama. Legal sources say that the release of the negatives of CCCC is possible provided the case is handled skillfully. . |
||
The designated judge of the special court,
A P Bhangale has ordered Shah to file written
objections or stake his claim at the earliest
if he so desired. The case is being tried
under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime
Act. The judge has also ordered the prosecution to supply Shah a copy of the application made by police on the seizure of the film's negatives at Film City in suburban Goregaon The police produced the seized negative prints of Rizvi's film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke before the judge on December 21. Subsequently as per the law, the judge directed that a public notice be issued in English and Marathi newspapers to invite within 15 days claims if any to the seized property. In case of no claims being released the court would be seized of the custody of the negatives and dispose it off therein under the Act. In case Bharat Shah is able to prove his claims to the negatives, the items would be released to his custody. However the police are apprehensive of this order, as their total case against Nazeem will collapse if Bharat Shah is able to prove his ownership of the negatives. The police is trying every trick in the book to ensure that Bharat Shah stays away from the negatives of CCCC. |

Is Salman the setting sun? |
||
2000 Dec 20 Go4i.com | ||
A rising star is like the rising sun ? everybody
worships him! And the setting Sun? No one
ever really bothers about the gloomy downslide!
Our film folk never tire of thrusting this
axiom down their contemporaries' throats
at the drop of a hat! But what happens when
they themselves need to be taught the same
adage? Well! That's a different story altogether. |
||
Quick on the rebound, Salman's fate has had him thrown out of Aftab Khan's film in which he had been teamed along
with Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Aishwarya Rai. Ajay Devgan has replaced him in the film since Salman asked for the satellite as well as overseas
rights as his remuneration but the producer
refused. Seems like his stars are not happy this time! |
In Trouble | |
2000 Dec 16 India FM | |
Trouble as always comes in droves. Barely
had Salman recovered from the infamous black buck episode,
was he raided by the Income Tax authorities
in September. Close on the heels of a police interrogation for criminal links for his role in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Salman and Aishwarya were summoned by the IT dept. Salman along with girlfriend Aishwarya Rai apparently visited the Income Tax headquarters to meet Director General, Investigations. Investigations revealed some documents belonging to his former girlfriend and Pakistani actress Somy Ali, which have caught the eye of the IT, imply financial irregularities. The department is now scrutinizing Somy Ali's foreign bank accounts on the basis of documents found at Salman's residence at Bandra. Salman's house was one of those raided during a swoop by I-T sleuths on several film personalities. In a double whammy for Salman, Aishwarya's opening the door to the Salman residence surprised the IT sleuths. This resulted in raids on Aishwarya, who was originally not on the list of people to be raided. Aishwarya generally stays with Salman. |
|
The department also recovered some blank
stamp papers signed by Somy Ali's father at Salman Khan's house. Ali was staying at the Khan residence for several months when she was
trying to get a break in the Mumbai film
industry. IT officials also recovered some documents pertaining to film stage shows organized abroad. The department suspects that some stars were using certain IT concessions to evade taxes. It believes that the stars, to evade taxes, were misusing a provision, which gives tax relief on professional fees earned abroad. Similarly, another modus operandi was a provision being misused to siphon off money abroad through the hawala conduit. Coming close on the heels of CCCC issue, Salman Khan has moved to his Panvel farmhouse and has switched off his mobile. |
Salman's loss is Ajay's gain |
||
2000 Dec 20 Cinemaa Indiya com
Salman Khan is out of Jhamu Sugandh's Hum Kisise Kam Nahin. What is surprising is that Sallu finds himself out of the project despite his best buddy David Dhawan being the director of the film. This is a big film to lose for the Khan. Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Aishwarya Rai and Jammu Sugandh. Salman had done Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam with Sugandh and shared a fairly good relationship with him.
Something really serious would have to happen
for them to have him replaced after two schedules
of the film had already been shot. And that
too, have him replaced by Ajay Devgun. The story that's out in the trade is that apparently Salman wanted the overseas territory, which is the most lucrative of all, as his remuneration for doing the film. Salman has been demanding and getting the overseas territory from other smaller producers like Bubby Kent and Shyam Bajaj but Sugandh refused to get bullied into a lopsided deal. Sallu's last couple of films hadn't made history for him to make such demands and that to from a project, which has Amitabh, Sunjay and Aishwarya to make it more than respectable already. But the Khan who's on a trip of proving a point more vehemently than ever (Flops do that to actors), refused to see the warning signals and was in for a rude surprise when Jammu decided to do away with him and get Ajay Devgun for his role instead. |
Rani Mukherjee: Preity Preetam! |
||
2000 Nov 13 Filmfare Online
Well, at the audio release of 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke', Rani and Preity were at their over-friendliness stunts all over again. And what's more. Rani was heard calling out to her Preity dearest... 'Preetam Preetam'. And then obviously the giggles and talks followed. Also sharing another great friendship were co-stars Salman and Sunju, who were also filled with giggles and small talks with Salman whispering sweet nothings into the Dutt's ears every now and then. But obviously their friendship was shown-off with a li'l more maturity than the gals'. Neways, we hope their movie does well, in the name of friendship at least, if nothing else. |

First negative role? | |
2000 Nov 12 India FM | |
Salman Khan will enact the first negative role of his career in his home production to be directed by E-Niwas of Shool fame. There were rumours in the industry that this project was shelved two days ago and that Sohail Khan, Salman's brother, had signed ad-film maker Kailash Surendranath to direct the film. But the rumours were set to rest by a close source of Salman who informed IndiaFM that the E-Niwas project and the film that Kailash is going to direct are two different projects. While the project to be directed by Kailash will go on floors by January-February 2001, the E-Niwas film will start from June next year. |

Salman to try his hand at writing script once again
2000 Oct 13 India FM | |
Salman Khan always wanted to follow his father's footsteps. But he strayed into an unknown territory, acting, with 'Biwi Ho To Aisi'. He did try his hand at writing twice, both misadventures. His first attempt was 'Buland' (with Somy Ali), which is incomplete yet, and the second was a damp squib, 'Chandramukhi'. But Salman seems to believe in the motto, try and try till you succeed. So in brother Sohail Khan's new project, to be directed by E. Niwas (of 'Shool' fame), Salman has decided to write the screenplay himself, with Sohail as companion. Let's see if Salman proves lucky in his third attempt! |
Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega enters UK Top 10 |

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has every reason to throw a party. As latest
reports indicate, his new film Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega is creating quite a few records abroad. In
the United Kingdom alone, the film grossed
about US$320,000 in its very first week.
The Salman Khan-Preity Zinta-Rani Mukherjee starrer has ever since entered the UK Top
10, where it's firmly seated for the past
three weeks. |
||
That pitches the Raj Kanwar-directed film into the ranks of alltime
greatest overseas hits such as Dilwaale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Aapke Hain Koun! An impressive show that, considering the
film is a take-off on the Hollywood hit,
While You Were Sleeping. Back home, the film has done average to good business in the various territories and most distributors are happy. |

Salman Khan: Comedy Khan No More! |
||
2000 August 28 Filmfare
Salman Khan, we are told is not interested in comedy no more. Yes, after the not-so-hot response to his comic flicks, 'Chal Mere Bhai and 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge' Khan has decided to stick to social, emotional and action flicks. Wethinks, he's following in the footsteps of Bobby Deol, who also resolved not to do any comic capers, despite his flair for comedy. What was that again? Oh, yes, typecasting. Happens all the time, no? |
Salman, Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai |

August 14 2000 India FM | |
The hottest news of the week is that Salman, Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai may come together in a film that will be
produced by Sajid Nadiadwala whose latest release is Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. The movie will be directed by Sajid's 'moo-boli bahen', the no.1 choreographer Farah Khan. However, when IndiaFM contacted Sajid to confirm the news, Sajid just smiled and said that nothing had been finalised so far and everything was under planning stages. If insiders are to be believed, it was Salman who thought of this project since he is very friendly with Hrithik and 'good friends' with Aishwarya. Let's wait and watch whether this project takes shapes or not. |
ARPITA FLOORED BY HRITHIK |
|
August 11 2000 Indya com
Last week Salman Khan had a party for Arpita, the little girl the Khans had adopted some years ago. Although Hrithik Roshan came late for the party, he made up for it by dancing for his little fan. He did the entire song from Kaho Naa... Pyar Hai, the climax one, and Arpita was beside herself with happiness. "This is my gift to you", Hrithik told her. Roshan and Salman are bicep-buddies, remember, it was the Khan who initiated the young actor to muscle mania. |

It happens all the time. You are driving along one of Mumbai's roads early in the morning, and you see this hunk pedalling away for dear life. And you think, hey, that chap looks so much like Salman Khan, even Salman himself could get confused. But, you add to yourself, it couldn't be Salman. On a bike? No way. Next time round, tell yourself it is. Salman Khan. In the flesh. The fitness freak has a thing for bikes -- he uses his top-of-the-line bicycle more often than he does his car. In fact, he has developed this practice of pedalling to his shooting locations, with his car and driver following him. |
Salman Khan: From Grumpy To Great! |
||
2000 August 9 FilmFare Online
Ok! So, Salman is not known to be one of the friendliest people around, especially when it comes to the Fourth Estate. But of late he sure seems to be going the 'nice' way. Even to the extent of trying to woo the press. Hey, we have seen a lot of him on TV, giving interviews and talking about his role in his new films and stuff. That's fine. But recently, he was even spotted signing T-shirts for his fans. Sallu tried to be as courteous as he could be. So much so, that when a fan complained that he had missed out on his T, Salman exclaimed, "Oh F**K!" Now, the innocent creature could have died of a heart attack out of fear, when Salman apologized saying it slipped out because he had forgotten. Genuine concern, shall we say? Or just plain change of image? Any which way you look at it, it sure will do a whole lot of good for his PR. |
Salman's popularity in the film industry |
|
August 8, 2000 India FM | |
If the number of prints ordered and processed
by distributors and exhibitors are an indicator
of a star's popularity, then Salman Khan tops the list. A film released with a maximum
number of prints on its premiere release
confirms the star's popularity and indicates
his standing within and outside the film
industry. For quite some time now, there has been a debate about who the most in-demand star is at the moment. In the 1980's and 1990's, when Amitabh Bachchan ruled the roost, a Bachchan starrer used to released with 250 to 300 prints at one go. But, of late, Salman Khan starrers seem to be the hot favourite of distributors and exhibitors. |
|
The year 2000 has witnessed the release of
some of the biggest films and the list indicates
that Salman is very ahead of his contemporaries. His
latest release, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, has created a record of sorts by being
released with a record number of 426 prints
at one go, the highest-ever for any Hindi
film. Believe it or not, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega has emerged the No. 1 film as far as the prints processed are concerned, crossing the record figure of 424 for Rajshri's Hum Saath-Saath Hain, which also starred Salman Khan in the lead. Trade Guide has been printing the breakdown of prints some big-budget films have been released with, of late: Mela 368; Kaho Naa.. Pyar Hai; 205; Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani 311; Pukar 320; Badal 327; Hey! Ram 157; Khauff 268; Dulhan Hum Le Jayenga 392; Chal Mere Bhai 320; Jung 242; Kya Kehna! 153; Refugee 300; Bichhoo 313. |
Salman Khan: Back-Up Business! |

2000 August 5 FilmFare Online
Salman Khan is one helluva smart cookie, especially when it comes to handling and investing his growing finances. Smart enough to realize that stardom need not last for ever, he is quickly expanding on his investments. First he launched an entertainment cum event management company along with brother Sohail producer Bunty Walia. Then he tied up with Wizcraft along with Sunjay Dutt, Karisma, Mahima and Govinda in the 'India Talkies' (the celebrity restaurant chain) deal. Now the 'topless' Khan is ready to invest in a new post-production studio, replete with all the facilities. Supposed to boast of top-of-the-art technology, the studio will also have a preview theatre, fancy equipment, latest dubbing and recording facilities, the works. Wonder what kind of phillums they will screen at the preview theater? Pam Anderson home videos? Maybe. |
Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega : Talk About Getting Real! |
|
July 30 FilmFareOnline
Seldom does it happen that in a love triangle involving two female characters one hears of heroines being war and cordial with each other. Especially if they are hardcore contemporaries. However, Rani and Preity seem to be setting a different example on that front. The two leading ladies in Sajid Nadiadwalla's 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Kargaa' are not just great co-stars on-screen but thick pals off it as well. In fact so solid is their friendship that we even heard that they constantly made co-star Salman the butt of all their jokes. This was of course behind his back. On the face of it however, they were stuck together like a ready-to-eat triple deck sandwich. Talk about three's company, this trio sure seems to be setting a trend of sorts. |
Salman - Amisha: Doing A Blockbuster! |

Salman Khan and the petite heroine of eKaho Naa Pyaar Hai ' Amisha Patel are all set to make the perfect match together. They are doing Ketan Desaifs next blockbuster project to be directed by David Dhawan. The film also co-stars Rishi Kapoor and sees the return of Rati Agnihotri to the silver screen. Seems like great pairing already. At least some people are saying that Salman is finally acting opposite a heroine who is the right size for him. Though with those heavy-duty muscles of his, he can probably star opposite Grace Jones too and no one would notice the difference. |
Salman: Khan's Night out! |
|
June 12 FilmFareOnline
The uptown night club at the Ambassador hotel in Mumbai, 'Flavours', saw a new flavour on Friday night. The entire Khan family was there in full strength of friends and family, partying the night away. Salman, Arbaaz, Malaika, Sohail's wife Seema (we didn't see hubby himself), sister Alvira, (hubby Atul Agnihotri was absent since his dad only recently passed away), friend Kamaal Khan etc. Salman himself was dressed in the latest American shopping gear (he was away for a month and a half on shows, remember?) and turning quite a few heads, therefore. However, the good-looking Khan seemed morose and distant despite the smile and the perky attitude. With Aishwarya not around to complete the family picture, we probably know the reason for his "ashin' mood". |

Salman to star in Baywatch? |

Apna Bollywood is catching up with Hollywood big way. Move over Shekhar Kapur and Manoj Shyamalan. The latest Indian to cause a hungama in the wild wild west is the indigenous sexy beefcake, Salman Khan. While the zooming popularity of the other hunk, Hrithik Roshan, has virtually taken the shirt off Sallu's back, India's Pocket Hercules is none too bothered. The latest we heard, the Khan, who's already been voted among the top 10 sexiest males on the planet, is all set to do a stint in the most popular tele-serial ever, Baywatch. So all you starry-eyed dames who can't get enough of the cool dude's fab bod in desi mumbaiyya fare, be prepared to watch a shirtless Salman turn up the heat on the beach that Pamela Anderson immortalized. |

Sooraj Barjatya is onto something 'different', so we heard. While the news is more or less confirmed that Barjatya will definitely sign up lucky mascot Salman Khan for his forthcoming film, here's a piece of delicious gulab jamun for you to savour. According to the biz buzz, Sooraj is keen to sign up Bollywood's latest sensation Hrithik Roshan and talks are already on between the two camps. Signing up Hrithik is Barjatya's attempt at something 'different'. We heard that because Hum Saath-Saath Hain didn't exactly turn out the blockbuster that Rajshri films had expected it to be, Sooraj want to radically change his cinematic fare this time around. Insiders tell us he's onto a fastpaced romantic thriller, for which Hrithik and Sallu would, of course, fit to the T. |

It might turn out to be a great coup for the Rajshri banner considering both leading men are hot property these days. Salman's got David Dhawan's 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge' round the corner while Hrithik 'raging' Roshan is on a golden run with his 'Kaho Na ...' still raking in the moolah. The Barjatya project starring the two is untitled we hear. Considering the two have, so far, let go of absolutely no opportunity at flexing their biceps, how about 'Hum Haath Haath Hai' ? |

After Aamir Khan's 'Mela' and Shah Rukh Khan's 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani', it time for the third of the three big Khans to line up his arsenal. And Salman Khan is just rearing to flex his well toned muscles once again with Gordhan Tanwani's 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge'. For Gordhan Tanwani, whose 'Ishq' and 'Pyar To Hona Hi Tha' did well at the turnstiles, this will be his third hit if it does well. And if one goes by the trade sentiments, this doesn't seem far fetched at all.
Directed by David Dhawan, the film also stars the heroine No.1, Karisma Kapoor. Mounted on an enormous canvas and shot on unexplored locales of Switzerland and Mauritius, the film is said to have all the ingredients necessary, namely, emotion, action, drama and music. The two muscled men are there to shoot a 'Thums Up' (their favourite cola) ad at an enormous budget. So it's work they are away on. But what they do after work is not anyone's responsibility. They probably watch the latest Hollywood releases we're sure. And that's about as FIZZical a tour as you can have on a cola shoot, right?. |

The last year has been a stupendous one for Salman Khan. Not only did three of his movies (Biwi No.1, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Hum Saath-Saath Hain) end up among the top hits of the year, even his "extra-curricular" activities were tremendously successful. Before you dirty minds think that we are talking of the star's love-life, let us assure you that post-Aishwarya, the hapless guy has apparently lost all interest in his old hobby of skirt-chasing. Sallu bhai now thinks only about work, work and more work. And the result is obvious to all his admirers. To add to his glee, Salman's ads for Thums Up have also been extremely rewarding-the soft-drink has registered a dramatic up-swing in sales ever since the Salman ads have done the rounds. "Taste the thunder" goes the successful catch-line of the ad, and as far as audience reaction is any indication, female fans of the beefcake star have lapped up the bare-bodied antics of the pocket Hercules. Yea, yea, ladies : taste the thunder of the sexy hunk's fab biceps! While Thums Up laughs all the way to the bank!! |

Looks like the Salman macho magic has definitely made a strong impact amongst teenybopper loyalists. |

Hrithik Roshan has a showbiz guru. And guess who it is? Wrong if you said papa Rakesh Roshan, who just gifted sonny boy a 10-crore birthday gift called Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai. Handsome hunk Hrithik attributes his drop-dead looks to Bollywood's bindaas boy Salman Khan. Hrithik says hadn't it been for Salman, who trained him at the gym in the early stages, he would never have had the inspiration or motivation to build up that fab bod. Apparently, Sallu and Hrithik, good friends both, used to exercise in the same gym, and when Roshan junior informed the Khan of his intentions to join showbiz, Sallu came forward on his own to help the guy out. With a motivation like Salman, who was not long ago voted among the 10 sexiest men on the planet, no wonder Hrithik has shaped up so handsome. |

Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya's latest paean to Bharatiya sanskriti, has become the highest grosser of the last year, overtaking David Dhawan's Biwi No.1 at the box-office. While Dhawan's movie had grossed over Rs 25 crores in it's silver-jubilee run, the Rajshri multi-starrer has almost reached the 30 crore mark, by its ninth week, thanks partly to a whopping 4 million dollars collected in the overseas territory. HSSH is the first ever Bollywood venture to break into the US Top 10 charts, and did better in the US than such Hollywood blockbusters like Eyes Wide Shut and Blair Witch Project. In the UK too, HSSH broke into the top 10, following the successful trend established by last year's Dil Se and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. |

For all those who thought Chal Mere Bhai was going to be Salman's first release this year, we've got news for you. Because the David Dhawan directed Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge is to be released before that. Though both films are directed by the rolly-polly king of comedy, perhaps the Khan preferred a solo hero project as his first rather than a two-hero project like Chal Mere Bhai which also stars Sunjay Dutt. And no, before his detractors jump to conclusions, this decision has nothing to do with Salman and Sunjay's friendship -- that is too strong to wither away for such petty reasons. So there. |

Salman Khan : Certainly, the hero no. 1 for 1999. Salman began his year on a dismal note with Jaanam Samjha Karo and had another apologetic mess, Hello Brother. But for the two turnips, he starred in two of the year's biggest hits, Biwi No.1 and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. And then there was Hum Saath-Saath Hain, where he sobered down from his usual funky self and was still accepted. His next releases, the David Dhawan-directed Dulhania Hum Le Jayenge and Chal Mere Bhai should be worth waiting for. |
